Southern Tanzania Union Mission
Southern Tanzania Union Mission-STU was organized in November 5, 2013 with a membership of 90,000. The organization came as the result of the splitting of the former Tanzania Union Mission, which was covering the whole United Republic of Tanzania.
The United Republic of Tanzania is one of the East African Community Countries with the population of 44.9 Million people, covering the area of 885,793 square Kms, divided into 30 Regions and 169 Districts. The United Republic of Tanzania is formed by: Tanzania Mainland (formerly Tanganyika) and the islands of Unguja and Pemba (Zanzibar).
STU is covering 480,589 Square Kms (out of 885,793 square Kms of the whole country), ministering to a population of 20.5 Million Tanzanians, scattered in 17 Regions (out of 30) and 81 districts (out of 169). The Union has two Conferences, and we are in the process of organizing the third Conference. According to the 3rd quarter statistical report, our membership has grown to 108,167, giving a ratio of one Adventist to One hundred and Ninety Tanzanians (1:190).
In the 17 Regions we are serving, we have a large population of Muslims. This is especially because of Zanzibar Islands which are to a greater degree Islamic. Another cause of that large Muslims population is the East Coast of Indian Ocean, which has a very big influence of Arabs. Mainland Regions of Pwani (Coast), Lindi and Mtwara (out of the Seventeen-17) are also largely dominated by Muslims.
The geographical position of our Union makes our Mission endeavors very challenging. Our membership reveals that the indignant of STU territory are extremely few, and in some parts-none. Our traditional ways of evangelizing have proved not to work.
We see approaches that touch community welfare being more welcomed and seem to be having good responses. We are now focusing on starting Adventist schools in this territory, from Kindergarten to Universities.
We are therefore appealing to any agencies, which can heed to our call to come over and support especially in establishing schools. We solicit prayers so that people from every kindred, and tongues in STU territory will be reached with the gospel of salvation and prepared for the soon coming of our Lord Jesus.
